About Dr. Leon Sullivan

Leon Howard Sullivan (October 16, 1922 - April 24, 2001) was a social activist, civil rights leader, and Baptist minister whose effectual reach spanned the globe. Dr. Sullivan pastored the Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia and was affectionately known as “The Lion of Zion.” He was the first African-American to sit on a Fortune 500 board (General Motors); wrote the Sullivan Principles, which helped lead many companies to divest from South Africa; and founded Progress Plaza in Philadelphia - the first African-American-owned mall. Dr. Sullivan was also the founder of Opportunities Industrialization Centers (OIC) of America and OIC International, providing job training for millions of people globally.
